Pearl’s home was small but still nice and cozy. It wasn’t anywhere near as nice as Super Dave’s house, but it was decent, it was home, and it was hers. She lay on her bed talking on the phone with one of her friends, watching stories like she usually did. Suddenly her bedroom door swung open and Rick came running in with a toy airplane in his hand.

“Yoeern!” said Rick, as he ran around the room with the plane held high as if it were actually flying.

“Hold on for a second, Elaine,” said Pearl into the receiver. She turned her attention to Rick with a frown on her face. “Rick! What the hell I tell you about that shit?” she said angrily.

“I know, Momma, but I’m bored. Can we go over to Daddy’s house?” asked Rick.

“Naw, you ain’t going over there. I don’t wanna hear that shit. Now you need to take yo ass outside somewhere and play before I whup yo butt,” said Pearl.

Rick sighed and dropped his head sadly, knowing from recent experience that it wouldn’t be a good idea to respond. He slowly turned and left his mother’s bedroom.
